Wolf Road Marriott hotel evacuated because of fire

March 7, 2006

COLONIE -- A small, smoky wall fire forced the evacuation of the Albany Marriott hotel on Wolf Road Monday morning, authorities said.

Firefighters controlled the blaze -- mostly smoldering insulation and dryer lint -- within five to 10 minutes, said Chief Jerry Paris of the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department. The fire was reported at 11:05 a.m.

No one was injured in the dryer-room fire, but lint and the spray-on insulation around the 10-inch dryer vent tubes gave off enough smoke that it took about an hour to ventilate, the chief said.

A woman who answered the phone in the hotel's executive offices, but declined to give her full name, said the entire building was evacuated. People were allowed back in within an hour.

Among those sent scurrying to the parking lot of the 359-room hotel at 189 Wolf Road were members of the New York State School Boards Association, who were holding conferences to prepare for a lobbying day today.

The fire didn't appear to pose a problem, said association spokesman David Ernst, who was notified of the incident shortly after he left the hotel. But the persistent alarms did interrupt a workshop on pensions.

Paris said that though the fire was small, no fire is routine.

"It had the potential to go someplace," he said.

Teen charged with setting hotel fire
03/10/06

FREEHOLD — Police have charged a 14-year-old Asbury Park boy with setting a fire last month that destroyed two landmark hotels, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office announced Friday.

The teenager, whose name was not released because of his age, has been charged with two counts of aggravated arson in the blaze that destroyed the Atlantic and the Belmont hotels. He was charged Monday but information was not released by the prosecutor's office until Friday.

The teenager will remain at the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center in Freehold. A review of the case has been set for March 27 in Family Court.
