Hotel guests
evacuated after fire breaks out

WESTBOROUGH - Many guests were displaced from the
Extended Stay Deluxe Hotel on Computer Drive yesterday
afternoon following a blaze in one room's kitchenette,
fire officials said.
Nobody was injured in the 3:26 p.m. fire at 1800
Computer Drive, which originated along a wall in the
kitchenette of room 132, according to Fire Lt. Brian
Roberts. Firefighters knocked down the flames in about
20 minutes, but the blaze resulted in significant
damage to the room and some damage to the hotel, he
said.
"This was a small, confined fire, but in a high-occupancy
building so that increases the seriousness of it,"
Roberts said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation,
he said.
A thick, dark gray smoke filled the building and
forced the evacuations, Roberts said. "They relocated
a number of their guests," he said. "Certainly
more than 10 or 12 guests, it might have been all
of them."
Nobody from the hotel could be reached for comment
last night. The company's Web site says the three-floor
hotel has 86 oversized studio suites with kitchens.
Significant fire, smoke and water damage was caused
by the sprinkler system and fire hoses in room 132,
a suite containing a bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom
and sitting area, he said. Roberts did not have an
estimated value of damage last night.
"Things were burnt and melted," he said.
"The contents of the kitchenette, cabinets, plates,
coffee maker ... those were damaged by fire."
"There was probably some water damage in the
hallway outside that room," he added.
Westborough Fire was on scene with engines, ladder
trucks and ambulances. Mutual aid assistance was received
by the Northborough and Southborough departments,
Roberts said.
It was not known if the occupants of the room were
there at the time of the fire. Roberts said the hotel
was evacuated when firefighters arrived.
