NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and Smokeview
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
FDS is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model
of fire-driven fluid flow. The software solves numerically
a form of the Navier-Stokes equations appropriate
for low-speed, thermally-driven flow with an emphasis
on smoke and heat transport from fires. Smokeview
is a visualization program that is used to display
the results of an FDS simulation.
Obtaining FDS and Smokeview Version 4
Version 4.0.5 of FDS and Smokeview has been released
(02/14/2005).
A setup program for Windows installing FDS, Smokeview,
documentation and example files is available for download
Individual FDS and Smokeview executables may also
be downloaded.
What's New in Smokeview
3D Smoke A method for visualizing smoke realistically
has been implemented by using soot density to compute
the transparency of a series of slice planes.
Tours Arbitrary paths or tours through a Smokeview
scene may be created. One may then view the scenario
from the vantage point of an observer moving along
one of these paths. A Tour dialog box may be used
to edit existing tours or create new ones.
Data Chopping Data from slice, particle and plot3d
files may now be chopped or truncated. See additions
to the Set Bounds dialog box to specify data bounds
below and/or above which data will not be drawn.
What's New in FDS
Smoke detector activation FDS now contains a smoke
detector activation model developed by Combustion
Science and Engineering under a grant from NIST.
Parallel Processing It is possible to run an FDS calculation
on more than one computer using the Message Passing
Interface (MPI).
Multiple Meshes Improvements have been made to the
multiple mesh capability allowing more flexiblity
in designing simulations.
Layer Height A simple calculation of the layer (or
interface) height has been added to FDS to enable
users to compare FDS and zone model calculations or
to present FDS results in a simplified manner.
Updates
An FDS/Smokeview self-installer is available. FDS
and Smokeview have been updated to versions 4.0.5.
A new email list, fdstesters@nist.gov, is available
for those interested in helping to test FDS and Smokeview.
Documentation now available for the DXF2FDS converter
