fire at Royal Hotel in Roscommon

Gardaí are not treating a fire that destroyed
a hotel in Roscommon town as suspicious.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the
Royal Hotel just before 9am this morning.
A neighbour raised the alarm when they saw smoke
coming from the building.
AdvertisementUp to ten people were in the hotel at
the time.
The building and the surrounding premises were evacuated.
The fire started in the ballroom of the hotel but
within minutes the whole building was engulfed in
flames.
More than 50 firefighters from five units of the
Roscommon and Leitrim Fire Brigade tackled the blaze.
It took a number of hours to bring the fire under
control.
During the incident, the area around the hotel was
sealed off and the main street was closed to traffic.
No one was injured, but the blaze devastated the
hotel run by a well-known local family.
