April, 2003
A recent fire at a factory in Leighton Buzzard was
limited by sprinklers effective activation. The incident
involved highly flammable polyolefin sheeting in a
yard around two sides of outside of the factory, which
was well alight on the arrival of the brigade.
Incident Commander DO Julian Sears commented: "This
was a particularly fierce fire. Polyolefin sheets
are highly flammable and there were liquid petroleum
gas cylinders exploding in the yard ... without the
drencher system, I am sure the fire would have spread
rapidly and the factory would have been lost."
The factory was previously devastated by a serious
fire, which prompted the installation of the sprinkler
and drencher systems that saved the building this
time.
