Sprinkler Saves Politicians in Brussels
20/12/05
TThe Belgian newspaper De Standaard reports that on Saturday
17 December fire broke out on the fourteenth floor of the
Hilton Hotel in the centre of Brussels, Belgium. Many politicians
were staying in the hotel, including the Spanish Prime Minister
José Luis Zapatero, who was in Brussels for the EU
budget meeting.
Only one room was affected by the fire. The sprinkler system
operated and the fire was under control by the time the
fire brigade arrived. The damage was minor.
By contrast the French fire service reports that the same
day there was a fire in the former hôtel Royal Splendid
d'Aix-les-Bains, now a five storey apartment building. 4
people were taken to hospital, 15 apartments were destroyed
and the building may have to be demolished.
