Sprinkler Saves Shops in Wales
21/12/05
Gareth Lloyd, Divisional Officer for South Wales Fire &
Rescue Service, reports that a sprinkler system operated
on Friday 9th December to save shops in the centre of Newport
from a fire.
The fire was reported just after 21:00. When fire crews
from Maindee and Malpas fire stations arrived they found
that the fire involved some plastic storage crates on an
underground service road beneath the shops. The heat from
the fire had operated a sprinkler in the loading bay. This
had prevented the fire from spreading into the store and
had stopped the external fire from developing.
Gareth Lloyd commented that, "Without the sprinkler
system the fire could have developed, spread into the shops
and developed into a major incident involving substantial
financial losses and large scale Fire Service involvement
