It was Saturday, June 17, 1972. The fire was over and the routine overhaul operation had begun. Then disaster turned the 3-hour blaze into the worst loss of life ever experienced by the Boston Fire Department. Nine men were killed when, at 5:28 pm, the southeast section of Hotel Vendome collapsed. Eight others were injured. The loss left Boston and the nation in mourning.
