Waste Containers
Waste containers in offices are required to be made of noncombustible
or approved slowburning material, as the use of combustible
materials materially increases the fire risk.
Fires in certain plastic waste containers have been known
to spread by melting the container and spilling the burning
contents to surrounding combustible materials. The following
rules will minimize waste container fires:
Use noncombustible or ULC nonmetallic containers in all
areas.
If plastic containers must be used to collect waste paper
for recycling purposes, they are not to be greater than
20 litres in size, no more than one container should be
located at a work station.
Dispose of cleaning rags into covered metal waste containers
of approved design.
